Peripheral Nerve Stimulation Trial

Overview

Peripheral Nerve Stimulation (PNS) is a technique used to control pain by placing electrodes along peripheral nerves. It’s a safe and effective method for managing various severe neuropathic pain conditions.

During PNS, electrodes deliver a mild electrical current to the nerve, which creates a tingling sensation for the patient. This stimulation activates nonpainful sensory pathways, essentially tricking the brain into reducing or blocking the perception of pain signals. Many patients find significant pain relief with PNS which can reduce or even eliminate their reliance on pain medications.

Procedure

During the procedure, you will receive local anesthesia and sedation for comfort. Healthcare provider will then use X-ray guidance to place a very thin temporary wire, called the lead, under your skin in the area where you are experiencing pain. This wire is inserted using a needle to help guide and position it correctly.

The procedure involves two stages. First, a temporary trial electrode is placed for about a week. This allows the patient to assess the effectiveness of PNS. If the trial is successful, the temporary electrode is replaced with a permanent one connected to an internal battery pack, similar to a pacemaker. This permanent setup enables the patient to manage their pain effectively while maintaining their normal daily activities.
