Caudal Epidural Steroid Injections
Overview
Caudal Epidural Steroid Injections is an injection procedure used to treat chronic pain in the lower back and extremities. Caudal Epidural Steroid Injection involves the use of a steroid and local anesthetic. This procedure is done for a wide variety of chronic conditions, including:
- Lumbar Disc Herniation
- Degenerative Disc Disease
- Lumbar Spinal Stenosis
- Postsurgical Pain Syndromes
- Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction
- Sciatica/Lumbar Radiculopathy: This condition causes pain and weakness along the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back down the legs. The pain is often described as sharp, with a sensation of “pins and needles.”
- Herniated Discs: This condition occurs when the soft cushion between the vertebrae is damaged, typically due to age or spinal injury. It is one of the most common causes of low back pain.
- Degenerative Lumbar Spinal Stenosis: This condition arises when the spinal canal narrows, compressing the nerves and leading to pain in the lower back and legs.
Procedure
In a Caudal Epidural Steroid Injection, a steroid is injected into the epidural space, which surrounds the dura and nerve roots of the spine. This space is where the irritated nerves are located. The injection also includes an anesthetic. The goal is to reduce inflammation and pain symptoms. Patients often experience improvement within a week after the procedure. The relief can be either permanent or short-term, enhancing the effectiveness of other treatments like physical therapy.
During the procedure, patients may opt for an IV for relaxation. They lie face down while the area for needle insertion is sterilized. A needle is then inserted at the top of the buttocks, guided by an X-ray machine to reach the epidural space. Patients may feel pressure at this stage. The injection is administered to ensure the medication reaches the affected nerves accurately.
What to expect after the Procedure:
After the procedure, patients may experience numbness around the legs and buttocks. Pain relief typically begins within 3-5 days, with an overall improvement in their condition within a little over a week.
